Pineapple is a tropical fruit native to South America, where it was known and appreciated by pre-Columbian civilizations for its sweet and refreshing flavour. Christopher Columbus discovered it on the island of Guadeloupe during his second voyage in 1493 and introduced it to Europe. Later, Portuguese and Spanish explorers spread it throughout their African and Asian colonies.
The pineapple plant (Ananas comosus) is a perennial belonging to the Bromeliaceae family and can reach about 1.5 metres in height. Its long, fleshy leaves form a rosette at the centre of which the fruit develops—an inflorescence made up of hundreds of small flowers that merge to form the typical golden-yellow fruit with juicy flesh.
Resistant to drought thanks to its leaves’ ability to retain water, pineapple thrives in warm, sunny climates with temperatures between 22 °C and 28 °C.
The name “ananas” comes from the Guaraní word nana, meaning “excellent fruit”, while “pineapple” was coined by European settlers for its resemblance to a pine cone.
Enjoy dried pineapple as a naturally sweet and aromatic snack, or use it as an ingredient in nut mixes and granola.
September 2025
Today, pineapple is among the most cultivated tropical fruits in the world, following banana, mango and coconut. The main producing countries are Indonesia, the Philippines and Costa Rica [FAOSTAT, 2023], which together account for about one-third of global production.
Among the most common varieties:
• Smooth Cayenne, the most widely grown, sweet with pale-yellow flesh;
• MD-2 (Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet), valued for its sweetness and high vitamin C content;
• Queen, smaller in size with golden, crunchy pulp;
• Red Spanish, typical of the Caribbean, with fibrous and slightly tangy flesh.
Econoce dried pineapple is sourced from selected farms in Ghana and Kenya, where the warm climate and fertile soil produce naturally sweet, juicy and fragrant fruit.

Store dried pineapple in a cool, dry place away from heat and humidity.
During the colder months, it can be kept at room temperature, while in summer it is best stored in a refrigerated environment to preserve its flavour and aroma.
Glass is the ideal material for storage, as it is impermeable and preserves the taste and aroma of the fruit. Coloured glass also offers better protection from light, helping to maintain the nutrients and natural colour.
Ensure the container is tightly sealed to prevent oxidation and loss of aroma.
