MACADAMIA NUTS

Macadamia Nuts

The macadamia nut is the fruit of Macadamia integrifolia, a tree belonging to the Proteaceae family. It is native to eastern Australia—particularly Queensland and New South Wales—where it grows spontaneously in subtropical forests. The name derives from the Scottish-Australian botanist John Macadam, to whom the species was dedicated in the 19th century.
Cultivation spread beyond Australia during the 20th century, finding ideal conditions in Hawaii, South Africa and Central America. The tree can exceed 15 metres in height and produces clusters of small, spherical fruits enclosed in an extremely hard shell. Inside is a smooth, ivory-coloured kernel with a delicate, buttery flavour.

Macadamia is considered one of the most refined nuts in the world thanks to its crisp texture and fine taste, and it is also prized for the production of high-quality oils used in food and cosmetics.
Try macadamias plain or toasted for an aperitif, or add them to biscuits, snack bars or pestos to season pasta.

Today, macadamias are grown in many tropical and subtropical regions. The leading producers are Australia, South Africa, Kenya and Hawaii (USA) [FAOSTAT 2022].

Two main species are cultivated for food use:

• Macadamia integrifolia, with sweet flavour and high commercial value;
• Macadamia tetraphylla, with a rougher shell and a slightly stronger taste.

Econoce macadamias come from organic farms in Kenya, where the climate and soil composition produce nuts that are naturally sweet, aromatic and rich in nutrients.

Nutritional values may vary slightly depending on the variety. NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) represents the daily recommended intake for each nutrient; 100 % NRV indicates the minimum advisable amount for maintaining good health.

SINU (Italian Society of Human Nutrition) recommends a daily serving of 30 g of nuts or dried fruit.

A balanced and varied diet, combined with an active lifestyle, is essential for wellbeing.

Store macadamia nuts in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct light. In warmer months, refrigeration is recommended to avoid fat oxidation and loss of aroma.
Glass is the ideal storage material, as it protects from humidity and oxygen.

Coloured glass also helps preserve nutritional properties and fragrance.
After opening, reseal tightly to maintain crunchiness and freshness.
